Student Health Service and Insurance
Students at Gallaudet University are required to have health insurance coverage or show proof that their sponsor will cover their medical expenses. The University offers school health insurance for students with an option to purchase.
Our medical system is probably very different than the medical system that you are familiar with in your country. Health insurance is considered beneficial in the United States since medical costs can become very expensive.
Listed below are some of the covered benefits usually found in a general insurance policy:
  • Hospital room and board
  • Miscellaneous hospital expenses - lab, x-ray, medications, etc.
  • Surgical expenses
  • Outpatient expenses: x-rays, laboratory tests, medication, treatment of the injury or illness as required by the attending physician
  • Emergency room expense relating to care received in a hospital setting
  • Inpatient and Outpatient mental and nervous expenses
  • Inpatient and Outpatient alcohol and substance abuse expenses
However, it must be noted that not all health insurance policies will cover all the items listed above. It is important that you read your policy to make sure you know what medical expenses are covered as well as medical expenses that are not covered.
Pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes, epilepsy, pregnancy, etc, may be excluded in your health insurance coverage. These are conditions which are diagnosed prior to obtaining a health insurance policy. You should note whether or not your health insurance policy excludes pre-existing conditions.
Health insurance policies may or may not have a deductible clause. A deductible is the amount that the insurance company will require you to pay when you utilize the services. The deductible is determined by the insurance companies.
If you choose to purchase your own medical insurance, the University requires that your health insurance include the following coverage:
  1. Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness.
  2. Repatriation of remains minimal amount of $7,500.00
  3. Expenses associated with medical evacuation minimal amount of $10,000.
  4. A deductible not to exceed $500.00 per accident or illness
Gallaudet University offers routine non-emergency care through the Student Health Service. The medical staff at the Student Health Service consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses. All full time students are charged a $50.00 fee to utilize Student Health Service. This fee allows students unlimited access to the Student Health Service.
