The End of Days..

Jeez. I know it’s been a while since you heard from me, but it’s not for a lack of trying. I’ve created about a half dozen lengthy entries, but every time I try to post, I end up losing my entry due to the limitations of this “movable type” program.

Well, maybe the fact I pressed the wrong button when trying to upload a picture had something to do with it. The last few weeks have been hectic, as we all get down to the “crunch.” Totally unfun, but totally necessary. I’m taking only four classes this semester, which is really weird for me, as I’m used to having a much heavier load, but it gives me more time to work (more on that later).

I’m taking the History and Psychology of Food, as I mentioned in an earlier blog, and last Monday, I gave a big presentation on the history and psychology of rice. An interesting tidbit (well, I thought it was interesting, anyway) is that the word for “meal” in Japan literally means “honorable cooked rice.” Next week, we’re going out for African and Italian food, and having a class potluck on Friday. The African restaurant is called Bukom, and it’s supposed to be very good. I’m taking my labret-studded partner in crime from the senior trip along, Mr. Dean Rousseau, as my “date.”

In my other classes, things have been largely uneventful. Yesterday, in Images of Deaf People in Media (taught by Emmy-holding producer Dr. Jane Norman) we discussed a movie called “Do You Mind?” directed by Lizzie Sorkin, a film student at Rochester Institute of Technology. A feel-good piece, it starred Patrick Graybill as an older bachelor who suddenly is forced to take care of a young Deaf girl. It was entirely shot in black and white, with ASL subtitled for hearing viewers. What I particularly enjoyed about this short piece was that finally there’s a movie about Deaf people that isn’t about Deafness. This gave me a brilliant idea for my senior honors thesis, which I’ll explain about in another post.

My roommate, Laurie, and I have been hosting a number of folks from out of town lately, as they find themselves irresistibly drawn to the allure of Gallaudet University, and we give tours (yes, tours) to these inadvertent tourists. However, our choices of “attractions” are a little different from the usual FDR and Lincoln memorial loop. Check it out! I took a few snapshots. Also, keep your eyes peeled for my next entry! Shouldn’t be too long!

This one is of the Native American museum (3 blocks from my apartment) at sunset- check out how the color of the light completely changes the museum from a yellowish-white structure into a rosy apparition.

Don’t you FEEL his pain, being trapped in the mud for all eternity? Now you can understand the emotions of many Gallaudetians during final exams ;)

'til next time, haaaang looooose!
