spring break and back to the grind

dI typed an entry, and somehow it got lost in this program, so here I go again... but my cat just made herself very comfortable in my lap, which is impeding my ability to type somewhat. Well I'll give it a shot anyway. Since I've already done the typical college spring break, that is getting drunk on an exotic beach and sunburnt, we (the roommate and I) decided to do something different. The roommate was burned out, not having a vacation for over 9 months which is what happens when you work as a dog walker- other people's vacations become your busiest times of the year. Anyway, so we headed out to California, as my parents gave us two free plane tickets (very nice of them!) and celebrated my 23rd birthday there.

Oregon and Washington

We continued our travels down the Pacific coast, first stopping in Seattle to pick up some friends from Gallaudet, Jeannie Brown and Stacey DeLaune. We went sightseeing in Seattle, which was a very familar experience for me as my mom's twin sister lives in Seattle, and I have gone to Seattle many times growing up, but it was Laurie's first time in the city, and we had a good time. After we went to Seattle, we drove down to Hood River, first stopping to hike a little at Mt. St. Helens which is an active volcano on the border between Washington and Oregon. After that, we went down to Hood River, where my aunt has another house. It was the day after we arrived in Hood River that we went whitewater rafting and I ended up breaking my poor leg :( Anyway, here are some pictures of Hood River, St. Helens, Seattle, and so forth for your viewing pleasure.

Idyllic Preface

Now that I've told you a little about my broken leg, shown you some gory pictures and all that, I think it's time for something on a more postive note - that is, the incredible road trip I took with Laurie through the impressive Pacific Northwest, and I'd like to begin with some pictures that were taken in Vancouver, Bowen Island, and Whistler, which are all in the province of British Columbia in our next door neighbor, Canada.

Broken Leg Diaries

DISCLAIMER: Gory pictures of wounds enclosed in this entry.

It happened on July 30th, 2005, on a beautiful, sunny day. My spirits were soaring, as I was in the midst of an amazing roadtrip that encompassed the entire Northwest, as we drove up from Berkeley (my hometown) all the way to Vancouver, BC, staying with friends and family along the way. Going hiking in the mountains, swimming in crystal-clear lakes, and sightseeing in some very beautiful locations made me feel lucky to be alive.

Almost killing myself on that eventful day made me extremely grateful for a guardian angel that was overlooking my path. I was with three friends, Laurie (my roommate and travel-partner, among other things), and two Seattle residents, Jeannie and Stacey, who are both former Gallaudetians. Anyway, the four of us had gone on a white water rafting adventure in the White Salmon river, near Mt. Rainier in southern Washington state, and things were going fabulously. Our guide was very nice (Todd, the owner of the rafting company), and the rapids were exciting. It was a sunny day, and the water was frigid.

At one point in the adventure, we needed to get out of the rafts to go around a large waterfall that wasn't safe to go down on in rafts. We hiked around the falls, and at that point we had two options. The first option was to jump off the cliff, which was about 30 feet high. The second option was to rappell down the cliff, going backwards, using a rope. I was one of the last people to jump, and somehow I mispositioned myself, and jumped out a little too far, and that was it. I hit a submerged rock and felt this excruiciating pain shoot up and down my leg and screamed in agony.

Silence and Respect

A series of images taken at the Arlington Cemetery. Right before Memorial Day, and right after graduation, I went with my roommate and her parents. It was a powerful series of images, and I took pictures so I would remember how I felt, seeing all those that have died to make our country a better place. The graves were eerie and beautiful. It was a little creepy to be in a place where so many lay under the earth, but at the same time, it was romantic and mysterious. The day was warm and muggy, and heat radiated from the graves. Check out my images, most of which I edited with Photoshop (a hobby of mine, among too many others, ha!)

California

I'm burnt out after final exams. I did better than I thought I would, but not as well as I hoped I would. Does that make any sense? If not, it's okay because I'm in a nonsensical mood, being as it's summer and I'm finally lying on the couch with my cats sleeping on the floor near me and narrow shafts of light slanting their way through the curtains.

Basically, I went to California for the long weekend after school finished, which was Mother's Day weekend. It was nice to be able to celebrate with my mom, and we all went out to a brunch in Napa Valley with my aunt and grandmother, as well as my sister and my dad.

And so...

...tonight will consist of attending a modest mustering of motley Gallaudetians for a merry, marauding midnight melee. Not bad for a self-created tongue twister, no? Maybe you gotta know how to work your tongue to create one of those, but hey, at least I tried.

Anyway... Things have been kind of nuts lately, with a thousand and one things on my rapidly expanding plate, as my "to-do" list grows and shrinks with an astonishing speed. As of right now, I have to
-edit one (1) paper
-take three (3) exams
-organize one (1) binder
-take one (1) quiz
and I'm DONE for the semester. The summer may commence with extreme rapidity!!!!

Whoo. The year went by like one crazy blur.... Highlights were definitely of getting my baby kittens in early November... they're about 8 months old now! Scary....

.....and of taking an amazing road trip with a good friend through the "best of California" (read: Yosemite's Cathedral forest; San Francisco's antiquated Haight and the vibrance of the Castro; Berkeley's liberal nature and greenery, Santa Cruz's surfing vibe, Monterey's amazing ocean views and long coastal drive, the kookiness of Canter's on Fairfax in L.A., pools, tanktops, sunglasses, and shorts on December 31st in Palm Springs, and too much more... it is the TRUE golden state.)

The End of Days..

Jeez. I know it’s been a while since you heard from me, but it’s not for a lack of trying. I’ve created about a half dozen lengthy entries, but every time I try to post, I end up losing my entry due to the limitations of this “movable type” program.

Well, maybe the fact I pressed the wrong button when trying to upload a picture had something to do with it. The last few weeks have been hectic, as we all get down to the “crunch.” Totally unfun, but totally necessary. I’m taking only four classes this semester, which is really weird for me, as I’m used to having a much heavier load, but it gives me more time to work (more on that later).

I’m taking the History and Psychology of Food, as I mentioned in an earlier blog, and last Monday, I gave a big presentation on the history and psychology of rice. An interesting tidbit (well, I thought it was interesting, anyway) is that the word for “meal” in Japan literally means “honorable cooked rice.” Next week, we’re going out for African and Italian food, and having a class potluck on Friday. The African restaurant is called Bukom, and it’s supposed to be very good. I’m taking my labret-studded partner in crime from the senior trip along, Mr. Dean Rousseau, as my “date.”

Hedonism 101, otherwise known as...

Spring Break. So, it was an experience worth having, but not one I would like to have again.

I went on my spring break, which was a cruise to Belize City, Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Grand Caymans, with 30 other seniors in the class of 2005.
My partner in crime on the trip was definitely the labret-studded Canadian, Dean Rousseau, although nine of the other people who went on the trip were from the same area of Northern California that I am from, and I've known them for almost 10 years. It felt strange to be hanging out with all my high school cronies again, but that's the nice thing about Gallaudet, and the deaf community in general - the chance to see people you haven't really talked to in years and act like it was yesterday... funny how that works, hmm?
Anyway, Dean and I did fun things - we met hearing people who gave us drinks in the hot tub and we also ordered all the items on the menu at dinner... we definitely had some memorable moments on the ship.
