every day has its dog...
You've heard the saying, every dog has its day. Of course, maybe you haven't really seen "every day has its dog". But the theory is perfectly applicable. Even more so at Gallaudet, actually. We denizens of Gallaudet have our ups and downs, and they're usually hilarious or just really hideous. Every morning, when the sun decides to rudely slither through the trapdoor of my unconsciousness, swinging it wide open and incorporating the day as part of the urban sprawl of my life, I wake up thinking this day is the first of the rest of my life. Okay, not really. I usually look directly at my ceiling, thinking absolutely nothing. And then I really, seriously, wake up, climb out of bed, and paddle in a pair of flip flops over to the bathroom, where I turn on the lukewarm water in the shower, and find something to do for the next 3.3 minutes as the water slowly heats up to an all-time record of seventy-two degrees. Arr, ye mates, avast! Raise ye sails... My medulla oblongata reverts to some kind of state between the conscious and not-so-conscious that reminds me that I have things to do, places to be, and blogs to write. Thus begins my day.
But this blog isn't about today, because today is not a complete piece of art. This blog is about my weekend. Every day has its' dog, and this weekend I had a Jack Russell on Friday, a frisky Dalmatian on Saturday, and a mellow, well-mannered Golden Retriever on Sunday. Representing the spectrum of my weekend, those three dogs combined made my weekend what it was.

On Friday, I did a few errands around campus before jetting to Union Station to catch a MARC train to West Baltimore, where a friend picked me up and we drove over to Westminister, MD, home of McDaniel College. McDaniel hosted a volleyball tournament over the weekend, where I got to see my fellow g-bloggers, Pia Marie and Charity, play some serious volleyball. Afterwards, I went out for some good stromboli and then ended up chatting the night away.

We stopped by Dunkin' Donuts, only to stand in line behind a throng of Westminister H.S. Women's Lacrosse players. Apparently they're ravenous when they order donuts. If they attack their opponents with the same ferocity they attack their donuts, they must be a pretty good team. We ordered six donuts- three cinnamon twists, one sprinkly donut, one maple glazed, and one glazed donut. With Tropicana Extra Calcium orange juice in tow, we headed over to campus and caught Gallaudet's game against Salisbury, who they defeated 3-0. In between games, my friend and I took a nice drive through the countryside to check out various yard sales (disappointing), farmhouses (dilapidated), lakes (smallish) and junkyards (massive). Still, it was a lovely drive- especially because the trees are just changing their colors now, as fall descends around us. We made it back in time to see Gallaudet kick Mary Washington all the way back home, and then we went up to Westminister, rented a couple of videos (Dogville and Off the Map) then crashed.

Sunday was just Sunday. Laidback, lounging, lethargic. And oh-so-relaxing. I got back to DC around 6:30, and walked over to my apartment for dinner with friends and their parental units. I think we spent way too long cooking dinner (spaghetti, squash, green beans, and chicken), but the end result was absolutely yummy when compared with the gray sea of Gallaudet slop present at the cafeteria. No, I'm being too harsh here- Bon Appetit does try to spice up our food, but it's still... cafeteria food! After dinner, a good talk among friends.

I woke up, thought about nothing for a good while, then got up and readied myself for a good day. I served 6 eggs in a variety of ways- three fried, one scrambled and one omelette. Two of my friends were over for breakfast, so what better start to my Monday could I ask for? I left my place at about 9:30, hung out at the HMB computer lab talking with Gallaudetians and pretending to get some work accomplished until noon, chowed down in the cafe at noon, then finally left campus at 1:03 pm. I made my way to Union Station to help drop off a visitor, then hopped on the 96 bus towards Capitol Heights at 1:59 or so, stopped by Capitol South to pick up some things at 2:23, then skipped to 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue. At 7th and Penn SE, you see a few things: Bread and Chocolate, Murky Coffee, Ben and Jerry's and several other stores and restaurants. This area means nothing other than Eastern Market to DC residents- the home for fresh-food stalls; meat, poultry and dairy stuff can be found here, along with greengrocers, fishmongers, and arts-n-crafts stalls catering to the eclectic tastes of in-the-know Washingtonians. I ducked into Murky Coffee, which offers free wireless Internet with its' cup o' joe, and I ordered an iced coffee, checked my e-mail for a bit while enjoying the DC view and then walked over to the city bus stop at 8th and Penn, for a 90 bus to 8th and Florida Ave, right outside the main entrance to Gallaudet. I then went to a Gallaudet women's soccer game against Goucher. Unfortunately, we sort of lost. During the game, I stopped by work (I work for Student Body Government), then after work headed back to the game in time to see us lose. Afterwards, I had a class to attend to, then spent the night doing various errands and talking with friends.
This is pretty much an average weekend at Gallaudet, full of little things that occupy your time much more than you actually realize.. ;) And this week is HOMECOMING, so there's definitely a lot of things to be done and really no time at all to do any of them. Enjoy ;)
