Ah…. As any college student knows, spring break is never long enough. Especially when your spring break involves snow for the second year in a row…
I don’t know what I did to offend mother nature, but for the second year in a row I’ve gone home, and for the second year in a row, its been nice and sunny in D.C, while its been cold in NM. Thank god I didn’t get snowed in for three days again this year. With my luck, I’ll take a trip to the middle of the Sahara desert next year, and we’ll get a foot of snow. On the plus side, I did get to fill my belly with the wonderful Green Chile that New Mexico is world famous for. I have to laugh when the Cafeteria has anything with Chile in it, I prefer to think of it as “Salt and pepperâ€. My poor friend Meg, she’s from Ohio, and she considers the food here to be too spicy for her on occasion. I’d love to have her visit my home sometime, but I’m afraid she’d spend all her time in the “Porcelain Reading Roomâ€
Hard to believe there are only six weeks left in this semester. I don’t know what I’ll be doing for the summer yet, but one things for sure, I won’t be staying at Gallaudet for the summer, or at least not all of it. While I love the Kendall Green, I occasionally need a break from it. Which is ironic since I think of it as my home now, rather then New Mexico.
Change is coming to Gallaudet, you can smell it in the air… or is that the tension? With the retirement of I. King Jordan, we are at a crossroad for the deaf community, where do we go from here? How do we deal with the issues facing us now, like audism and racism? How do we expand and improve as an educational institute? It’s a great time to be a student here, because you can really make a difference. However, I don’t think that these changes are going to happen quietly.
On April 7th, fellow Gblogger Robyn Girard and I will be squaring off in a courtroom.. Relax, I’m not suing her for all that torture she inflicted on me as a freshman.. [The guilt on Robyn’s soul is enough
] Robyn and I were both involved in Mock Trial this semester, and as a member of the prosecution she will be trying to convince an all deaf jury that my poor client is guilty. I wish I could take pictures of the event, but sadly they have a strict ban on camera’s in the courtroom, however I will be sure to post what happens.
One thing I love about spring here is the fact that we get to enjoy the beautiful weather and hit all the tourist spots before tourist season actually begins. It’s surreal going to one of the Smithosonian Museums when they are almost empty, makes you appreciate it all the more.
I leave you with this pearl of wisdom… If Dick Cheney asks you to go Hunting, say NO!
Ladies and Gentleman of the East Coast. This is what a real “hill” looks like. What you call a “hill” I call a “speedbump” I’d show a picture of a mountain, but I’m afraid the shock would be too much.
The last day of my spring break I went for a drive in the country, and the road led me to Grants NM, where I stopped at a Native American (Navajo) cultural Center, and saw this beautiful horse mural that was created by a team of artists.
