New York City is a vibrant place. It is one of these living creatures that come up from the depths, stretch towards the sky and envelop you in such a massive outburst of energy that you’re literally knocked to your feet. New York is only New York. I’m addicted to the pulse and flow of the city, but it’s an addiction that perhaps only manifests itself when I’m actually in New York, and going through the streets, walking in the middle of a massive crowd of multiculturalism that is actually what America is supposed to be, not a segregated slice of racist dogma that exists in films like Crash.

Times Square, baby!
I’m really late with this blog. I mean, I should’ve posted these pictures ages ago. Last fall, I went up to New York with a great group of women- Megan, Jessica, Summer and my fellow gBLOGgers Jessica and Charity. We got together because we wanted to participate in this whole walk/run for breast cancer that was taking place in New York City on Sunday.
But wouldn’t you know it, it rained. Ok, that’s a total understatement. It poured clawing and hissing cats and dogs. This downpour was only comparable to one other in my whole life- one that Charity and I went through in Prague this past summer, when we were backpacking across Europe. Incredible. Plus, New York City is a mass of crisscross streets, so you can probably appreciate just how easily flash floods appeared in front of our feet when we were making our way to the hostel.

Me being dumb and pointing to something, a painted duck maybe, and saying “duck”. Funny, huh? Not.

We went all over New York City that weekend, from Penn Station up to Times Square and 42nd Street, down to Union Square and SoHo. I dragged the girls along to the Strand, a famous New York bookstore that has miles and miles of books.. and we were overwhelmed! We had plenty of New York style pizza, too

I love New York. I’m currently considering going to graduate school there, at Parsons The New School for Design, the same school that I took a few courses at two summers ago, along with a course in Film Title Design at NYU. The first time I visited New York was five years ago, before I went to Gallaudet, because I was looking at NYU as a school choice. I think graduate school is the perfect thing for New York, though- the mature, bohemian lifestyle that New York boasts is a perfect blend with a graduate school life. If you ever get the chance, go ahead and buy Rent, a film based on the musical by Jonathan Larson that absolutely encapsulates my ideal of New York life. I am now a die-hard Renthead after seeing, falling in love with, and being given the movie (on the day it came out on DVD, no less!)- and I have yet to see the musical, so I’m in for a treat! The next time I’m in New York, I hope to catch a cheap ticket to see Rent, and maybe a redux Wicked (I was lucky enough to see Wicked with the original cast of Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, and Joel Grey).
So, I’m practically a walking tourism ad for New York. Go on up! Buses leave two blocks from Union Station several times every day, and drop you off right at Penn Station, in the middle of the city. Roundtrip tickets are only 35 dollars, through Washington Deluxe. Enjoy your next New York sojourn

Cool… I really miss New York. I last went there before flying to Boston since 2003. I am from Singapore.
