“Lucy, I’m home!”

“Oh, Ricky!”

Lucille Ball has to be one of my favorite people, despite the fact that she’s dead. But that’s besides the point.

I’ve been home for almost a week already, and while it’s been nice, it’s time to go back to Gally!! There’s nothing like a journey home to remind me why I like Gallaudet so much. I woke up this morning to find my mom sitting on a chair next to my bed, hovering over me. “How long have you been there?” “Oh, about an hour”
I don’t know, do all parents do that to their children? Hover? I understand when their children are young they just want to be with them (ESPECIALLY when they’re quiet), and there’s nothing cuter than a quiet, sleeping baby. It’s even precious when they’re drooling. I don’t think it’d be as fun watching an 18-year-old drool, but hey, I could be wrong…

So I flew for the second time ever when I came home last week..it was…scary. especially with all the security and stuff. The first time I’ve ever flown I was in 4th grade and with my family. This time I was by myself :( But I went with my friends, Jennie, Anthony and Michael, so it was decent, until I had to venture off by myself and get on the plane. It really wasn’t that bad, I just like to freak myself out and assume the worst.
When I landed at the Metro Detroit airport, I got in touch with my mom to let her know that I’ve arrived, and I waited outside for her to come get me. and I waited. and waited. and waited. Finally, I see her drive by, her waving madly at me. She haphazardly parks, gets out of the car and says to me, “Hurry! I’m parked illegally!”
Thanks mom, nice to see you too!
I went home and saw my brother, Joey (future Gallaudetian!!) and he gave me a big hug.
Saw brother number three, Ben, and he said that he wasn’t going to give me a hug because I didn’t say bye to him when I left for Gallaudet in August. But I made him get up and hug me :)
And then I saw brother number two, Kevin, who said to me, “Your hair is black. You Goth!”
And since then, I don’t think I received a single, normal “Hello, Colleen!”

Other greetings I’ve received were:
“Your hair!”
“Your hair…”
“I like it!”
“CHANGE IT!”
“Oh, it’s not that bad, when I heard ‘black’ I was thinking…’BLACK!’”
“I guess we should call you “blackie” from now on.”
“I didn’t even recognize you!”

*sigh*

::note::my real hair color is light brown. My wonderful roommate, Megan, convinced me to dye it black as a way to become a rebellious college student :)

Unfortunately, I don’t have a job to keep me busy while I’m here, so I’ve had to find ways to keep myself busy. I’ve babysat a few times, and I plan to keep on babysitting…my desperate attempt to make moneeyyy! (I’m as poor as they get!) I usually babysit my cousins, one who screams “NOO!” every time I walk in the house. I like babysitting though, nothing like sitting around watching TV when the kids are asleep, eh? It’s when they’re awake that makes me want to pull my hair out!
Not really, though! I love my cousins!

Plans for the rest of break:

-Get out of the house!
-Sleep
-babysit
-hang out with my fwiends! :)
-Get out of the house!
-Enjoy food that doesn’t come from the gally cafeteria :)
-Sleep

I know, I lead an exciting life, don’t I?!

This year, for some reason, my mom decided that she wanted to take a picture of us kids to send out in Christmas cards. We haven’t done that…ever. A few years ago, however, my mom wanted to take a picture to put in a picture frame for my great grandma, as part of her Christmas gift. Now I look at both of the pictures and I see how MUCH my brothers have grown! Geez louise!

^—this picture was taken…uuhh…five years ago? (!!!) top: Joey and me bottom: Ben and Kevin. Notice how I tower over everyone. note: I was standing on my tip-toes because I wanted to be much taller lol

^—this picture was taken just this year. Joey is in the back. Kevin is to my left, and ben, the youngest and tallest and skinniest (FRIGGIN BEANPOLE!) is to my right.

I learned in Biology this year that my family is part Chinese (DNA testing is AMAZING!)..can you tell? ;)

have a good one!

    Hello Colleen,

We must be distant cousins. Most Caverlys in Mich. are in the same family tree. I’m an old guy, 60, with 3 children, 28, 26, 24. My dau. is 24. I understand much of what you have written. Remember you will look back on all of this when you are older and remember the good times and yes parents will also be concerned even when their children are adults. My wife said “she will always be my little girl” when we talked about our dau. yesterday.
Enjoy life, work/study hard and do your best. Right now we both live in the best countries in the world (I live in Canada). Many are less fortunate then you and I.

    Regards,
    Paul R. Caverly

We MUST be related! Every person I know who says, “Hey, I know a Caverly!” happens to be my dad’s cousin, second cousin and so-on!
People tell me all the time to cherish the time I have right now, where I am and who I am with, and trust me, I am…being at home does have its moments though, I’m sure you understand :)

You are wrong … it’s hard to see one’s daughter leaving for college, and I can imagine myself doing the same as your mom did … sitting at your bed and pondering on the times gone …

Has nothing to do with hoovering — after all, your mom brought you into this world, raised you and has spent so much wonderful time with you. My dear: She misses you!
