English Sequence Programs

English & Math Placement Tests   Academics   Site Index

Because Gallaudet students have a wide range of skills, Gallaudet offers four different sequences of English courses:  Honors, Accelerated, General, and Academic Skills Access Program. Each sequence is designed both to challenge students and to meet their needs.  Students are placed in a sequence depending upon their ACT scores in English and reading or their performance on the COMPASS Test.  Especially well-qualified students are invited to apply for Honors.

  • Honors Program. All students with ACT English and Reading scores of 19 or above or SAT verbal score of 600+ are invited to apply for admission to the Honors Program. A letter from the Office of Admissions will inform you if you have qualified to apply. Application to begin in the fall semester includes an interview in the spring or summer (via videoconferencing or in person) with the honors director and other honors faculty, a review of transcript(s) from high school and/or other postsecondary institutions, consideration of math ACT scores, and participation in the online discussion of the honors common reading. Admission is conditional through the first semester and depends on performance of an essay on the common reading and successful completion of fall honors courses. The only differences in the application process for the spring semester are completing an essay on the previous common reading during NSO (instead of participating in an online discussion prior to NSO) and interviewing during NSO (instead of prior to NSO).
  • Accelerated Program. Students in the Accelerated program take only three general English credit courses to satisfy the general English requirements. ENG 120 is the first of the three required courses in this sequence. The other two are ENG 121 and 204.

  • General Program. Students admitted to the General program take four general English credit courses: ENG 102, 103, 203, 204 or ENG 102S, 103S, 203S, 204S. These courses provide a college-level curriculum to students who are ready for the challenge.

  • Academic Skills and Access Program. For some students who demonstrate potential for academic success but need an opportunity to develop English language and literacy abilities, there is the ASAP Program. This program consists of a number of non-credit courses to prepare students for college-level reading, writing, and thinking skills. ASAP students take exit tests at the end of every semester to see whether they are ready to take credit courses.

Transfer students are also placed according to their ACT or COMPASS scores and may not take credit English courses if their scores are not high enough to qualify them for the General Program.
