The New Signers Program (NSP) is offered at no cost to freshmen and transfer students with little or no signing skills. The goal of the four-week immersion program is to help students learn enough basic sign skills before fall semester so that they can communicate with other Gallaudet students, staff, and faculty and make the best use of campus services. During NSP students enroll and participate in a three-credit sign language course (ASL 101) which provides sign language instruction as well as information about Gallaudet's history and traditions, deaf awareness, deaf culture, the history of education of deaf people, and other interesting topics. In addition to sign classes, students participate in a one-credit Learning through Discovery (PED 222) course, a popular adventure-based outdoor activities course focusing on developing teamwork as well as decision-making and conflict resolution skills.

Upon successful completion of the program, students receive three credit hours for ASL 101, (American Sign Language) and one credit hour for PED 222 (Learning Through Discovery).

Program Costs
There is no charge for NSP students enrolled during the summer of 2007. Room, board, health fees, program fees, activities fees, and books are already covered; however, if participants do not have proof of health insurance, they will be required to purchase health insurance for the duration of NSP at a minimal cost. Please contact Orientation.Programs@gallaudet.edu if you do not have health insurance.

Students should bring extra money ($100) to spend for recreation and field trips. Transportation and meals (when appropriate) are provided by the program for some trips.

If You Participate But Do Not Enroll the Fall Semester
NSP is only open to students who have been accepted to the University and intend to enroll for the fall semester. Those who attend NSP and decide to withdraw from the University during or upon completion of the program will be required to pay the following program cost below:

Tuition $2044.00 *

* This reflects the U.S. tuition rate for U.S. citizens and those with green card, which is $511 per credit  ($511 x 4 credits = $2044). International students pay $992 per credit  ($1022 x 4 credits = $4088).
